This is my second Caddyshack cross stitch pattern – you can read the blog post about the first pattern, “Au revoir, gopher.”

Once again, the quote for this pattern comes from Assistant Greenskeeper Carl Spackler as played by Bill Murray.

The text of the scene is below (thanks, IMDB!), but it helps to watch the scene to appreciate the quote. I love how nonchalantly he has the pitchfork at the caddy’s throat. I don’t think the actor had too much difficulty expressing his concern over that pitchfork.

Carl Spackler: So I jump ship in Hong Kong and I make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas.

Young caddy: A looper?

Carl Spackler: A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

So if you’re looking for a reminder of what to say to remain graceful under pressure, this Gunga Lagunga pattern is for you! With it’s border pattern of Tibetan prayer flags, this stitching project will grace a desk, a mantle, a golf course locker, a meditation corner, or even the plywood wall of an assistant groundskeeper’s shack.

I had to be a little creative with the white prayer flag. Tibetan prayer flags are in a specific order – blue, white, red, green, and yellow. On a white background, the white flags disappear. I mixed one black strand with two white strands (hopefully to suggest the printing on the flags), and I think that was a good solution.

This Caddyshack cross stitch pattern was lots of fun to design and to stitch!
