30 Helens Agree Cross Stitch Pattern – Kids in the Hall

This 30 Helens Agree cross stitch pattern is now available in my Etsy shop:30 helens agree cross stitch pattern kids in the hall

This project is inspired by the series of “30 Helens agree” sketches from the first season of The Kids in the Hall. The Kids in the Hall (or KitH) are a Canadian comedy troupe of five performers, Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Their show ran from 1998 to 1995, and it’s real testament to their creativity and talent that some of their sketches are still revered today. So revered, in fact, that in May of 2022 Amazon released a new 8 episode season of KitH.

In most of their sketches, the Kids play the women characters. And unlike Monty Python, where the men playing women were acted and attired somewhat crudely, the Kids play women more respectfully (unless, of course, if the character is batsh*t crazy, like the Sizzler Sisters, or the Chicken Lady). They were helped by the costuming and makeup teams that did a great job at making the guys look more like women. This is another recurring KitH sketch (Kathie and Cathy) with all five of the Kids playing women in an office:

The 30 Helens agree sketches were one of the times where the Kids didn’t play women. These are real women, ostensibly all named Helen, standing in a field. The Helens would agree on a statement such as “love hurts”, “honesty is the best policy”, “you can’t pay too much for a good pair of shoes”, and “coleslaw deserves another chance”. The segments are funnier than hell and the Helens are adorable.

I had to take a few small liberties in making changes to the Helens to make the pattern work. The blonds had to become much darker haired only because blond floss matched their skin floss color too well. Having red legs on the Helen in red just looked too odd. And my favorite Helen, the tiny lady in the gold dress in front, had to become a blond as one of the women behind her was wearing white. Even with all of that, I think this 30 Helens agree cross stitch pattern captures the spirit of the sketch quite well!
